                           DR.  MASSIMO BAISTROCCHI


Born in Karuizawa (Tokyo, Japan) on August 17, 1942 to a Diplomat father who was serving in Japan at the time and who, subsequently, also served in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt and France.  

July 10, 1968         Graduated with Doctorate in Political Science from  the Catholic University “Sacro Cuore” in Milan;  
April 7, 1970         Joins the Italian Ministry of  Foreign Affairs beginning his Diplomatic Career;  
April 13 - August 12 1970     Attends a compulsory course for Young Diplomats at the Italian Institute for Diplomacy;  
August 14, 1970    Posted to Press and Information Directorate of the Ministry;  
October 7, 1970    Appointed Second Secretary;  
August 14, 1972    Posted to Kuala Lampur (Malaysia) as Second Secretary (Commercial);  

October 7, 1974    Promoted to First Secretary  
June 21, 1975        Posted to Algiers (Algeria)  
April 2, 1979         Returns to the Ministry in Rome and was posted to the Directorate for Technical, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation;  

May 1, 1980          Promoted Counsellor;  

June 1980 -June 1981     Back to the Italian Institute for Diplomacy for a one year Course for Senior Career Diplomats;  

July 1, 1981           Ag. Head in the Directorate for Cultural Relations with the task of Promoting Italian Culture in the World;  

August 30, 1983    Posted to Washington as Counsellor (Political affairs);  

September 22, 1986         Posted to Moscow as Counsellor and Head, Political Affairs;

December 19, 1988          Posted to Hong Kong as Consul General with accreditation to Macao (Portuguese  Territory);  

October 26, 1991   Returns to the Ministry in Rome and was posted to Head the Directorate for Economic Affairs;  

May 12, 1996        Nominated Ambassador to Ghana with accreditation to Togo;  
January 9, 2001      Nominated Ambassador to Namibia;  

May 11, 2004        Returns to the Ministry  of Foreign Affairs in Rome;
July 16, 2004         Chairman, Interministerial Committee for the Recovery of the Italian Works of Art.
October 25, 2006   Arrival to Nigeria as Head of Mission, credited also to Cotonou (Benin).
