The Italian presence in Ghana in the field of culture started in 1956 when Prof. Vinigi Grottanelli carried out the first Italian Ethnological mission, that focused its studies in the Nzema area (around the town of Axim) and whose activities have continued until now under the leadership of Prof. Mariano Pavanello.

There is also a well-established collaboration between the University of Ghana, Legon and some other Italian Universities (in particular Roma-Sapienza, Pisa, Urbino) in the field of anthropology and historiography, that has resulted in the carrying out of studies, research and seminars. The University of Milano-Bicocca is conducting an ethnological mission in West Africa, which includes research in Ghana.
Upon the initiative of Prof. Valsecchi of the University of Teramo a co-operation agreement between the said University of Teramo, that of the Milano-Bicocca and the University of Ghana, Legon is under consideration.

New prospects for the promotion of our language and culture (which suffered due to the closure of the Institute of Culture in Accra in 1996) will be opened now with the project of the inclusion of Italian in the Department of languages of the University of Ghana, Legon, which will be carried out thanks to financing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Embassy of Italy has been participating regularly in the “week of the Italian language in the World” by organizing cultural events for the Ghanaian public and the international community in Accra. In 2006 an opera concert was held, as well as an exhibition of old engravings which illustrated the experiences of the first European travelers along the coast of the Gulf of Guinea.
