The Italian Cooperation supported the effort of the reconstruction of Ghana economy, joining the strong commitment of the international financial Organizations, conscious of the importance of the Country in the African context.
Most of the grants were used for the project of rehabilitation of the Accra-Tema waterworks (carried out by SAE-Sadelmi company), with a financing fund of more than 11 millions of Euro.
Between 1984 and 2004, Ghana benefited from Italian grants of an amount of 19,8 millions of euro (1,53 millions of euro in the period 2000-2004) and  benefited of credit facility of 17,5 millions of Euro. During the same period, lots of food aids have also been granted.
A strong positive impact on the bilateral relations has been noticed following the process of cancellation of debts within the reinforced initiative of HIPC, culminated in the bilateral agreement of final cancellation of debts of June 2005 for a total amount of 33.83 millions Euro.

The main initiative of the Italian Cooperation in the country, approved in 2004, is the program of support to PMI, called Ghana Private Sector Development Fund, a mixed assistance of both loan and grant of a total amount of 11 millions of Euro, feeding a line of credit of 10 millions of euro in favour of the small and medium enterprises of Ghana.           The program has been highly welcomed by both companies and the Ghanaian government. Up to September 2006, the program has received a total number of 260 requests of access to the credit, but the funds available  could only meet the need of only 29 applications.

The program of training of the African civilian personnel within the initiative financed by our Cooperation “Peace Building and Good Governance Project” carried out by UNDESA, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa and University of Ghana, which in the year 2006 went on successfully with its own activities, continued up to now to arise great interest also for its political value. In the same contest, the Italian contribution toward the “Kofi Annan International Peace-Keeping Training Centre” is not to be left out. Such contribution is destined for the completion of the structure and recently destined also for the organization of a course for the police personnel and magistrate in conflict zones.

Of a particular importance is also the MIDA program (Migration for Development in Africa) realized by IOM (International Organization for Migration) with the funds of our Cooperation with the aim of giving value to the professional capability and economic resources acquired by Ghanaian immigrants for the development of their Country of origin.

It must also be added that Italy is contributing to the Cooperation of the European Union, which has allocated a total sum of 331 millions of euro on IX FES (between 2002 and 2007) and a similar sum is in program on X FES  for the period 2008-2013.
