Welcome Message
History has recorded that the first contacts between the populations which lived in the Italian peninsula and those of what is now Sri Lanka date back to the III century AD. Subsequent relations were, however, regrettably scarce, aside from a mention in Marco Polo's travellogues. Yet, by the close of the XX century, Italy started looking at the south east of Asia with more attention and interest, with the aim of developing mutually advantageous commercial and social ties with the countries in the region. The relations between Italy and Sri Lanka, whilst traditionally very friendly, have experienced an aspecially vigorous phase of development since 2005, following the decision taken by the Italian Government and civil society associations to engage substantial funds and resources for the implementation of reconstructon and rehabilitation projects in Sri Lanka, in the aftermath the tragic tsunami of 26 December 2004. Additionally, the depth of socio-cultural exchange between Italy and Sri Lanka has increased substantially in the last decade, primarly as a result of the presence in Italy of a Sri Lankan community that has proven itself to be productive, industrious and able to integrate easily into the Italian society. As a consequence, Italians and Sri Lankans increasingly look to one another to develop opportunities for economic and social cooperation on all levels. The objective of this site is to provide a virtual space and a meeting point for Italians and Sri Lankans who want to know more about thei respective countries. For Sri Lankans, in particular, it will offer, through its many links, a wide perspective on the different aspects of the Italian political, ultural, economic and social system. By definition, this site is in constant evolution and we are open to any suggestions on how to make it more interesting, useful and user-friendly. Should you not find what you are looking for, do not hesitate to contact us at the Embassy.
