ITALIAN POST-TSUMANI INTERVENTION IN SRI LANKA  

The Italian committment for post-tsunami reconstruction in Sri Lanka has totalled the amount of € 89.000.000. This amount includes public and private funding on the side of Italian government, regions, companies, associations and citizens. Italian Cooperation with €14,850,000 and Italian Civil Protection with €53,123,422 took responsability of the implementation of the highest number of projects.

In general, the Italian intervention was aimend at the reconstruction and at the rehabilitation of areas affected by the tsunami. In particular, the main sectors of intervention were:  
    -     Housing recontruction and rehabilitation
    -     Social/health assistance
    -     Education/water sanitation
    -     Fisheries/livelihood
    -     Disaster management
    -     Education
    -     Vocational training
    -     Psyco-social sector
    -     Microcredit  

In their action Italian Cooperation and Italian Civil Protection focused on psyco social, reconstruction, health, water sanitation and fisheries sectors. Both organisations implemented all projects directly or through the 25 Italian NGOs located in Sri Lanka, carrying out 75 overall projects throughout the country. Other 35 projects were implemented directly by other Italian public or private donors.
Moreover, other 3 projects, focused on fisheries, education and water sanitation, were funded by Italian Cooperation and implemented by 3 UN Agencies (WFP, FAO e UN Habitat).
In addition to this, through the cancellation of the bilateral debt on the side of Italian authorities, 7.134.698 euros were made available to the Government of Sri Lanka for the reconstruction of infrastructures in tsunami affected areas.
