The Italian government has funded in 2008 a new bilateral cooperation programme in the agricultural sector for the development of Ampara District. The programme, officially started in 2008, will be directly implemented by the Italian Cooperation office located in Ampara.
The programme will be carried out coastal areas of Pottuvil, Tirukkovil and Kamunai villages, where the Italian Cooperation has already implemented various post Tsunami emergency projects in the past.
 The programme is focused on:
1)      Enhancement of the productivity of small land owners through the excavation of 50 well dug for agricultural proposes.
 2)      Improvement of the Veterinary Surgeon Office of the Ampara District, through the construction of 2 veterinaries centers, the supply of equipments and furniture for 8 veterinary centers, the distribution of 300 selected cows at local cattle farmers, who will receive additional specific training.
 3)      Construction of 2 new slaughter houses and supply of equipment for 5 other slaughter houses.
