Sector Growth

In 2005, the agriculture sector grew by 5.2 percent compared to 5.8 percent in 2004. the decrease in the growth rate was caused by drought in some parts of the country. Growth of the agriculture sub-sectors in 2005 was as follows: fishing 7.3 percent; crops 5.2 percent; livestock 4.2 percent; and frestry and hunting 4.5 percent compared to 6.7, 6.0, 4.8 and 3.8 percents in 2004 respectively. Moreover, contribution of the agriculture sector to GDP decreased to 45.6 percent compared to 46.3 percent in 2004.

Food Crops

In 2005, the production of some food crops particulary wheat, maize, millet and bananas declined. However, there was an increase in production of cassava, beans and paddy.

Cash Crops

In 2005, there was an increase in production of pyrethrum, tobacco and cotton, while production of cashew nuts and coffee decreased.

Investment in Agriculture Sector

In 2005, the number of private investors in the agriculture sector increased to 169.0 from 145.0 in 2004, equivalent of 16.6 percent.
