Overview of commercial services’ providers
Italian businesses are increasing their presence in the emerging economies and nowadays priority is given to more in-depth forms of internationalisation such as investments and joint ventures, as opposed to mere exports.
To this purpose, the Commercial Offices attached to Italy's diplomatic and consular Missions, along with the foreign Offices of the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) represent the most helpful points of reference on world markets.
The activity of the Embassy of Italy in Dar es Salaam aims, therefore, at facilitating and promoting business relations between Italy and Tanzania. Main tasks are to provide accurate information on the developments of both Italian and Tanzanian economies, on their legislative frameworks, on specific sectors operators might be interested in; to establish useful contacts in respect of economic and commercial issues; to facilitate the relations between the operators of the two Countries in order to enhance the trade flows and promote investments.
In order to facilitate any possible co-operation between the two Countries two Agreements were signed for the avoidance of double taxation as well as for promotion and protection of investment.
The Italian Institute for Foreign Trade is the government agency devoted to promoting trade, business opportunities and industrial co-operation between Italian and foreign companies. The aim of these offices is to provide businesses with services in a geographically decentralized context and synergy between Italy’s network of local manufacturers and the global market. Through these offices the operators, especially small and medium sized enterprises, can access a range of services that favour the internationalization of the productive system. The Johannesburg Office of the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade is competent for Tanzania.

“All that glitters is..Gold – Art & Design in Italy”
Exhibition on the art of jewellery making
On 28th and 29th November 2003 the Embassy of Italy organized in Dar es Salaam the promotional event “All that glitters is..Gold – Art & Design in Italy” which was articulated in a Seminar and an Exhibition on the art of jewellery making.
The event was officially opened by the Vice Minister for Energy and Minerals, Hon. Ibrahim Msabaha. The Seminar presented the Italian experience in this field, from the origins to the new technologies, the goldsmiths’ techniques, designs and final transformation. It also focussed on a prospective co-operation with Tanzania and, in particular, on the opportunity to develop a jewellery sector in the Tanzanian economy: investment opportunities; professional training and qualifications; involvement of the banking system; enhancing role of medium and small scale mining enterprises.
The Exhibition diplayed the newest production of some Italian goldsmithers and jewelers as well as manufacturers of machinery coming from Arezzo, which is the second Italian district for productivity and export of Italian jewellery.
The Italian jewellery industry is one of the healthiest post-war growth industries, production having more than quadrupled in the last twenty years. In 2002 Italian goldsmithery had a turnover of 6.64 billion Euro, processing approximately 600 tons of gold, one fifth of the fine gold placed annually on the world markets and three-quarters of that placed on the European ones. As for the other sectors representing the renown "made in Italy", production of jewellery is sustained for about 75% by export, that in 2002 registered the amount of 4.96 billion Euro, ranking Italy the first exporter of jewellery in the world, with a market quota of 22.5%. Design and creative capabilities of the Italian artisans are the competitive factors on which the Italian goldsmith’s industry actually counts, along with the advanced level of technology.
Italian investors are willing to start a fruitful co-operation with Tanzania in the goldsmith’s industry. Such co-operation could bring to important synergic results and to a certain mutual economical benefit. Tanzania, in fact, could offer not only the raw material, but also a wide availability of labour and suitable places. Italy could offer instead entrepreneurship, marketing, know how, and particularly the well-known resources of the Italian workers in the field: creativity, fantasy, rapidity of projects’ realization and, of course, the excellence of producers of specific equipments.
