Vietnam still remembers the solidarity shown by Italy during the long conflict with the United States, and since that time it has looked at our country with amity and sympathy, recognizing its important role in the European Union and in multilateral forums.
   Diplomatic relations were officially established in March 1973 with the founding of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. In 1975, after the fall of Saigon and the reunification of the country, the Italian Embassy was set up in Hanoi.   The bilateral relationship has become stronger and richer since the 1990s, when the economic reforms known as Doi moi began, bringing Vietnam modernization and greater integration with the rest of the world.
   The main points of Italy’s foreign policy towards Vietnam today are:
 - Supporting Vietnam’s policies of integration in the international community and in the United Nations system, and of cooperation with the European Union, including more extensive dialogue in the field of human rights;
 - Strengthening economic and commercial cooperation, investment promotion, and Italian production in Vietnam;
 - Cooperation in cultural fields, including diffusion of the Italian language in Vietnam, and in scientific and technological fields;
 - Supporting economic growth and making efforts to contribute to the improvement of conditions for the most disadvantaged people.
