Today the activities of the Italian Cooperation in Zambia are entrusted to “CeLim” and “ALM”, two NGOs involved in projects concerning the containment of the spread of AIDS in line with the National Strategic Plan for the Fight against AIDS drawn up by the Zambian Authorities. These projects operate mainly in under-developed rural areas, where it is more difficult to distribute information about the disease. This is where incidence of the disease is particularly high, as is also the case in Chirundu, and other border zones where there is a high risk of contamination.  “CeLim” is also involved in projects which aim at encouraging entrepreneurial potential in young people seeking employment in the agricultural sector, and to develop their manual skills.

Current projects are:

CELIM – Give credit to the poor people – support to the economic development of the Siavonga District
(7842/CELIM/ZMB)

The project aims to improve life conditions of the poor people of the Siavonga District through the establishment of conditions conducive to the economic growth of both rural and urban areas.

The project focuses on the development of the technical and managerial competences of the population and on the promotion of financial services accessible to poor people. In this way, the project triggers the creation and the development of productive activities which create revenues.

Thus, the goals are: increase the education rate; improve technical competences, develop economic-managerial capacities of the local population. Moreover, the project endeavours to carry out a savings and credit system which will give access to small loans useful to set off productive activities and, at the same time, to preserve the savings of the people and groups who will adhere to the initiative. From the strategic point of view, the intervention is meant to be both on the formative and on the financial level.

CELIM – Support to the building of a hospital in Kafue –
(8009/CELIM/ZMB)

The project seeks to integrate itself with the work of the local community in the building of the Kafue Hospital.

The specific goal is train doctors, buy and preserve hospital equipments and guarantee the contribution of qualified doctors who are able to guide and educate local personal in the hospital management.

The strategy foresees the start of the hospital activities with Italian personal (one doctor and one surgeon), supply medical equipment, train local personal so that the hospital would be able to work in an efficient way and, in the long run, in autonomy.

The intervention area is the Kafue District for a three years period. As a result, all the local population (172,813 people, 77% are children less than 14 years old and woman in fertile age) will benefit directly from the CELIM project.

CELIM – Consolidation of the education and formative services on the behalf of Livingstone vulnerable youths –
(8041/CELIM/ZMB)

This project is the continuation of the project defined as Youth Education Centre of Livingstone (2480/CELIM/ZMB).

During the last three years, trough the activities of the 2480 Projects, a centre of aggregation and education for orphans and youths in difficulties was built in the town of Livingstone. At present, the Centre, named Youth Community Training Centre (YCTC), gives education opportunities since it offers four professional courses: tailor, joinery, hotel services and joinery. Moreover, aggregation activities have been put in place with the goal to involve city street kids.

As already stated in the original 2480 project, after the first three years of activities the project shall continue its activities for three more years. In this way, the work in act will be consolidated and the basis for an autonomous management of the Centre by the Livingstone Diocese will be completed.

The goal of the new project is, therefore, to assure the continuity in the education and aggregative work of the Livingstone Diocese on the behalf of the vulnerable youths and HIV/AIDS orphans. In this way, in three years these activities will stabilize and strengthen the project and, at the same time, they will produce effective tools of auto-financing of the YCTC.
