Devastated by the AIDS plague, Zambia sits at the bottom of the list of countries in the UN Index for Human Development and receives every year substantial aid donations the situation.
The rapid urbanization process of the last 10 years generated a situation of high degradation in the cities, where most of the people lack essential services. In the villages, the sudden lack of man-power has thrown thousands of people into poverty and has destroyed the traditional way of life.
73% of the population lives in poverty while 58% live in extreme poverty. 80% of the population has no access to electricity and half does not have access to drinking water.
Zambia hosts two major refugee groups (which exceeded 200.000 people in 2005) from Angola and the Great Lakes Region (Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi).
Italy partecipates in cooperation projects especially on a multilateral level and it is the second highest donor to the World Health Organisation‘s “Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria”.
Some Italian NGO’s work in the social, agricultural, health and education fields. Senator Pianetta (President of the Human Rights Commission of the Italian Senate) met some of their representatives of during his official mission to Zambia in October 2004.
