The diplomatic relations between Italy and the Philippines have always been marked by the absence of any seriuosly contentious issue. Despite the geographical distance, the Philippines developed a peculiar empathy toward our Country due both to common cultural references and, most recently, to the presence in Italy of a strong filipino community.
Over the last few years, a renewed interest toward the Philippines has been emerging, brought forward both by the political instances and, albeit more slowly, by the private companies, the latter having kept themselves afar from the Country after the Asian financial crisis of the late 90s.
Indeed, the appearence of transational networks of islamic terrorism operating even with the South-east asian region added more urgency to the need of consolidating the political dialogue with the Philippines, in addition to the relations in the specific context of development aid.
The Philippines represent a crucial intelocutor for the struggle against the armed extremism and, consequently, a primary reference for the political initiatives aimed at eliminating the breeding ground of islamic terrorism. Among these last, the promotion of the inter-faith dialogue, wherein Italy can play a leading role, owing to historical, cultural and geographical reasons.
