Born in Parma, Italy, on October 3, 1943.
Education
- Italian and US High School Diplomas (AFS Exchange student in 1960-61).
- 1966 Law Degree from the University of Parma;
- 1968 M.A. from the School of Advanced International Studies – SAIS,
Johns Hopkins University (Washington D.C.) (Fulbright Fellow);
- 1981 Diploma in European Studies from the De Gasperi School of Higher
European Studies, Rome;
- 1997-88 Fellow at the Center for International Affairs - CFIA, Harvard University.

- April 1969 Joined the Italian Foreign Service.
- Postings in Santiago (71-74); Moscow (75-79); Madrid (83-87); Washington (88-91);
Geneva-UN (94-99).
- 1999-2003 Head of Policy Planning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rome.
- 2000-2003 Chairman of the DAC/OECD Network on Conflict, Peace and Development
Cooperation.
- 2003-2008
Italian Ambassador in Tehran.
