Economic relations between Italy and Norway have been changing along the years with energy replacing the traditional fish export to Italy and Norway becoming an importer of larger and larger quantities of Italian design products and furniture, machinery and food. According to the latest data, import-export turnover has been around 21 billion NOK, excluding ships and the continental shelf. Norway is one of the leading suppliers of gas (for a value of around 8 billion NOK in the first 9 months of 2006) to Italy, through major inter-European pipelines.
The flow of investments has room for improvement, with Italian presence in Norway being relevant in the energy sector (ENI group and Edison have production licences on the Norwegian Continental Shelf) and building industry products, while some 30 Norwegian companies have opened subsidiary in various part of Italy.
A promising field of cooperation for companies from the two countries is developing technology programs and joint ventures, especially in high-end technology sectors, like aerospace.
