16/04/2008 - An italian Navy Task Group to visit Saudi Arabia
16/4/2008
-
An italian navy task group, consisting of ships etna and borsini, is expected to arrive in jeddah on mid-mai 2008. This new visit of italian navy units to saudi arabia follows a previous one that took place in september 2006 at jubail and confirms the excellent relationship existing between the two countries and their armed forces.
It will also represent a further opportunity to show the newest and most advanced ships and sophisticated technology of the italian navy, as both units have been built by italian shipyards “fincantieri” and are mainly equipped by the national defence industry.
The italian naval group left taranto, its naval base in the mediterranean sea at the end of january and is supposed to sail across the arabic sea and red sea during a four month campaign named “medal 2008” that will allow the task group to visit many different countries of the region, including saudi arabia, egypt, oman, u.a.e., qatar, kuwait, bahrain and india.
The planned activities included the participation to a relevant navy gathering that took place in doha, qatar, from 17 to 19 march 2008 (dimdex 2008). The main objective of the campaign “medal 2008” is to foster cooperation with other navies operating in the so called “wider mediterranean sea”, an area of high relevance for political and economic reasons both for italy and for saudi arabia.
