
The Italian
cultural cooperation, orignally focused on the archeological field, in the last few years increased in quality and quantity.
The Italian
Archaeological Mission of the ISIAO is active in Baraqish, Al Jawf Governatorate, and Tamna, Shabwa Governatorate.
In 2003 the Yemeni Italian Center for Archaeological Research was opened in the premises of the National Museum of Sana'a.
Other projects have been approved i.e. the restoration of one of
the most important mosques of the Country (Madrasa Amiriya in Rada' a)
and, with the contribution of the Italian trust funds at Unesco,
a safeguard plan of the ancient center of Sana' and an
intervention in the Center of conservation of Koranic manuscripts Dar
Al Makhtutat.
In 2003 a course of Italian language and literature was launched in Sana'a University thanks to Italian funds.
Many cultural events have been organized by the Embassy of Italy: in
2004, in the framework of the celebration of Sana'a, Arab Capital of
Culture, the exhibit "Islam in Sicily", the workshop of the artists
Baldo Diodato and Alfredo Romano and the concert of the group of Luigi
Cinque.
In 2004 the bilateral Agreement on Cultural and Scientific Cooperation,
signed in 1998, entered finally into force. After the adoption of the
relative "Executive Program", in phase of negotiation, the Agreement
will be a valid instrument for an increase of cultural relations.
The Italian program of scholarships currently allows 33 Yemeni citizens
to follow postgraduate courses in Italy, mainly in medical sciences.
