Italian development aid has lately increased in quantity and quality.
Health sector is a traditional field of intervention for the Italian Cooperation in Yemen. A project on district health care and primary health care, mainly based in Sana’a and Hodeida, is currently running and a project realized by the Italian NGO Movimondo on the creation of a physiotherapy course in Sana’a and Aden has been successfully completed.
A special mention goes to the cooperation projects carried out by Italian Regions and other bodies: Tuscany welcomes into its hospitals minors injured by mine explosion, the Hospital “G.Pasquinucci” in Massa cooperates with the hospital Al Thawra in Sana’a, University of Rome “La Sapienza” and the Italian-Yemeni Friendship Association are actively involved in this sector.
Italy has been also active in various other fields, usually in cooperation with international agencies: environment (sustainable development and biodiversity in Socotra, led by UNDP), demining (led by UNDP), good governance (decentralization and election support, led by UNDP), refugees (led by UNHCR), rural roads and infrastructure.
In 2004 Italy committed to grant a soft loan to the Yemeni Coast Guard for the creation of a civilian VTS system for maritime safety in Bab el Mandeb strait.
Moreover, the entry into force of the debt swap agreement will allow, through the cancellation of Yemeni debt, project in various fields .
