Italy, through its action inside the various multilateral fora to which it is a member (EU, NATO, G8, Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council), supports the process of Euro-Atlantic integration for BiH.
The relations between BiH and the EU are currently managed in the framework of the Stabilization and Association Process. On 25 November 2005 the negotiations for a Stabilization and Association Agreement between BiH and the EU started. They are ongoing.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is also committed to join the NATO Partnership for Peace. To this end, the country has started a reform of its defence structure (since 1 January 2006, there has been a single military for the whole country, thus replacing the previous Entity-based armed forces). The main obstacle to the accession of BiH to the PfP remains the Bosnian full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
