The diplomatic relations between the Italian and Myanmar governments date back to 1950. The Italian Embassy in the Union of Myanmar was opened in 1957 in the capital, at that time known as Rangoon.
Various reasons, both economic and political, suggested the decision to open a Delegation in the then so-called Burma. The country had just achieved independence from England and needed technical assistance and production goods in order to organize itself economically and, of course, politically. The abundant natural resources and the scarce population made the country attractive with regard to the economic and commercial relations with Italy. Furthermore, at the beginning of the 50’s there was a meaningful presence of Italians living in Rangoon, as well as a consistent number of PIME’s missionaries whose activity was particular relevant in preserving the cultural heritage of the country. These reasons were definitively influential in the choice of opening a further Representation in the region.
The first diplomat to be assigned as Ambassador in Yangon was the Minister Plenipotentiary Giuseppe Brigidi in 1957. However, starting from 1950 the Italian government named a Special Envoy and Minister Plenipotentiary based in Karachi and, later on, in Bangkok.
Since 1975 the Embassy is located in a prestigious residential area of the capital called Golden Valley. Both the residence and the chancellery are sited within a large park. The consular, commercial, cultural and administrative offices are situated in one building.
