Because of the peculiar political condition of Myanmar, as well as the EU common position, bilateral development efforts have been impossible. Therefore, Italian involvement has only been possible for emergency and humanitarian intervention and has been mainly of two kinds: through UNODC with the programme “Drug control and development in the Wa region of the Shan State” and the WHO with the programme “Sanitary emergency-fighting HIV/AIDS".
