Political cooperation is strongly conditioned by Myanmar’s institutional frame. The country has in fact been ruled by a military dictatorship which, for over 40 years, has strictly controlled every aspect of the country’s life. For this reason, the EU common position regards some forms of sanctions and, until now, limited exchange of visits at the political level.
The intensification of political relations is largely subordinated to the results of the democratic reform process that the ruling junta has started to implement, although in a timeframe inadequate compared to the urgent needs of the country.
