GENERAL INFORMATION

1) Will I need a visa to enter Myanmar? Where should I get it?
Italian citizens who wish to visit Myanmar should have a minimum 6-month valid passport and an entry visa. In order to obtain the tourist visa, which lasts 28 days, one should submit 2 photos, a copy of the identity card (or driving license), and 2 duly filled application forms, which can be requested at the Myanmar Embassy in Rome, Via della Camilluccia 551, fax 06/36298566

2) Which goods should I declare upon arrival?
Upon arrival in Myanmar one should declare electronic appliances, jewellery, and foreign currency above US$ 2000.

3) Which foreign currency is easiest to change? Are there any ATM? Can I use credit cards?
US dollars and Japanese yen are the easiest foreign currencies to convert into kyat (the local currency). Since in Myanmar there are no international ATM, we strongly recommend you bring with you the amount of money needed during one’s stay in the country. In general it is rather difficult to use credit cards, however VISA, JCB, Diners Club and AmEx are the only credit cards accepted in Myanmar, although in a limited way.

4) Can I access email servers?

In Myanmar it is not possible to access the main email providers (such as yahoo and msn). Nonetheless, some hotels offer an email service through their private lines.

5) Will I be able to use my GSM mobile phone?
GSM phones are unusable in Myanmar and the import of satellite phone is strictly prohibited.

6) Where can I stay?
In Yangon the housing and hotel offer has rapidly increased in recent years. Comfortable and western-standard hotels and residences are available. In main tourist destinations there is an adequate hotel offer that should be able to satisfy different needs.

7) Can I use an Italian driving license to drive in Myanmar?
In Myanmar tourists are not allowed to drive any vehicle, therefore the only alternative is to rent a car with a driver.

Although a few border-passes between Thailand and Myanmar are opened to people on day trips, usually the continuation to Yangon is not permitted. The Mae Sai-Tachilek border is available only to leave the country.

3) Which areas are off-limits to foreigners?
For the time being the Kayah and Chin State, and some areas of the Shan, Kayin, Mon and Tanintharyi States are completely off-limits to foreigners. We recommend you verify this information at the Myanmar Embassy in Rome before leaving to Myanmar since the areas subjected to restrictions can vary according to tensions amongst the ethnic tribes.

4) Which vaccinations are advisable?
The suggested ones are: hepatitis A and B, Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Typhoid fever. Those who travel outside cities should also consider anti-malaria tablets. We stress that in Myanmar there is no adequate sanitary infrastructure.
