The foreign trade trend, the performance of Tourist sector and foreign direct investment dynamics during the first semester of 2006 has confirmed, for the sixth consecutive year, our country as the first economic partner of Croatia. Italy is the first supplier and the main client : during the first semester of this year the 19% (2,869 billions of dollars) of the foreign trade amount of Croatia has been directed to the Italian economy. A significant support for the Croatian economic growth has been provided by Italian tourism: in the first 8 months of 2006 Italy is at second place (15,2 %: 1 077 316) for arrivals. Our compatriots represent the 20% of direct tourist flows to Croatia, a considerable part considering the importance of this sector consisting on the 13% of GDP. Whereas the most important contribute to the economic development comes from foreign direct investments accomplished here by Italian firms. Italy is the fifth direct investor after Austria, Germany, United States and France. The last among the afore - mentioned countries has invested 1,05 billion of euro in the first semester of 2006, moving from a marginal position and becoming one of the most important investors. Realistic statistics about the total amount of Italian investments, considering also the financial triangulations which involve Countries like Austria and Luxembourg where favourable laws for financial holdings are in force, induce to think that the real value is around 1 billion of dollars, so the 10% of the total amount of foreign direct investments and not, as it results by the official data, the 7,7%.
